NEW YORK - He may receive much scorn and hostility in the US media, but President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad never fails to surprise and entertain.
In his latest trip to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly he revealed his latest passion: chess. According to President Ahmadinejad, he is found that the best way “to understand the mind of the Jew” is to play chess. Since New York City parks are known to have some of the best chess matches in the world and many Jewish players, he took his entourage to Washington Square Park three blocks west of Broadway.
Although President Ahmadinejad only had time for one match, he undoubtedly learned quite a bit. One of the park’s premier players cleared his pieces from the board in 10 minutes.
“People think that I hate the Jews, but I really admire them,” he said through an interpreter. “Their minds are the most cunning in the world.” He uses chess to spar with Jews in a safe environment.
“If the Zionists make the mistake of attacking us, it will be like a chess match,” said the president.
According to Jewish Studies professor Elliott Zweigel, chess indeed reflects Jewish culture and history. “Jews have excelled at abstract thought and use chess to hone their thinking skills,” he said. Are they striving for world domination? “Let’s just say we are comfortable running the world of finance but do not need anything more than that,” said Professor Zweigel.
