The Next Marriage Frontier

OP-ED

May 10, 2012

Each Saturday night, countless American men and women prepare a delightful meal, snuggle on the couch to watch a movie. Perhaps they sip a glass of their favorite wine. They do this on their own and without a partner. Not a single state, however, recognizes their lifestyle.

President Obama showed courage in finally speaking in favor of gay marriage early this election season.  For gay rights activits across the U.S., the president's support was long in coming. The federal government should pass laws guaranteeing gay marriage across the country. At a minimum, the president will give further momentum to state ballot measures granting marriage rights to gay Americans.

Our leaders and our media seldom discuss those Americans living the single lifestyle. According to the latest research, almost 50% of adult Americans live single.  These Americans suffer discrimination in their health plans, in their tax treatment and in other areas of public life simply because they choose to live alone. Soon after this country fully addresses the marriage rights of homosexuals, it must turn its attention to the marriage of individuals to themselves. "Table for one" must no longer be a loathsome phrase.  The love of self is real and deserves official sanction. It is, as once so aptly expressed, "the greatest love of all."
